Bridgewater, NJ – The Somerset Patriots (19-12, 69-32) defeated the Sugar Land Skeeters (11-20, 47-54) 8-5 Tuesday afternoon at TD Bank Ballpark.
In the bottom of the first inning the Patriots plated three runs to grab a 3-0 lead. First baseman Travis Scott committed an error that led to the initial run then catcher Adam Donachie roped a two RBI double.
The Skeeters plated a pair of runs in the top of the third inning cutting the deficit to 3-2. Designated hitter Daryle Ward pounded a RBI double and left fielder Johan Limonta hit into a RBI fielder’s choice.
Scott evened the score at 3-3 in the top of the fourth inning with a RBI single.
Somerset retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning as right fielder Michael Burgess blasted a home run (9) and designated hitter James Skelton looped a two RBI double.
Center fielder Denny Almonte hustled for an inside the park two run home run (8) to dwindle the Skeeters’ deficit to 6-5 in the top of the sixth inning.
Third baseman David Vidal spanked a two run home run (5) to make the score 8-5 in favor of Somerset in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Gus Schlosser earned the win (1-0) in his Somerset debut pitching a scoreless relief inning. Matt Wright suffered the loss (5-7) hurling 4.2 innings while allowing six runs. Jon Hunton notched his Atlantic League leading 29th save.
