The dining hall at Rutgers Prep is one example of the school’s environmental stewardship recognized by the township Environmental Commission.

The Rutgers Preparatory School on Easton Avenue will receive an award from the township’s Environmental Commission for the school’s “many contributions to the environment of Franklin Township.”

The school was notified that it would receive the commission’s “Organization Environmental Stewardship Award” in an Oct. 27 letter, according to a press release. The award is scheduled to be presented at the Nov. 25 Township Council meeting, according to the release.

“It is our understanding that these contributions include past participation in the Rutgers Green Purchasing, being a River-Friendly School, recent construction of a new LEED certified building, new energy management installations, and development of an effective composting and recycling program,” commission chairman Arnold Vernick wrote in a letter to RPS headmaster Steven Loy.

In response, Loy said the school is “very proud, and sincerely humbled, by your act of recognition,” and that the school environmental efforts are “truly a collective effort,” according to the release.

The school runs a number of energy management programs on campus, “and continues to explore additional avenues to emphasize sustainability in our operations,” according to the release. “The Dining Commons has a fully designed recycling and composting program, envisioned and organized by our faculty and students.”

The dining commons, the newest building on campus, is a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified building.

The school is also a member of the United States Green Building Council.
