New Britain, CT – The New Britain Bees (27-29) shut out the Somerset Patriots (33-24) 7-0 Monday evening in the series opener at New Britain Stadium.
“Tonight was just one of those games,” remarked catcher Mike Kerns, who saw his first action since May 1st. He picked up a pinch hit single in the ninth inning. “I never stop working. A lot of people think I just show up, put my glove down and catch bullpens, but that’s far from the case. I’m always trying to stay sharp because you never know whose watching or noticing.”
The Bees received an RBI sacrifice fly from Craig Maddox in the first inning and an RBI groundout by Jon Griffin in the second inning.
With the score 2-0 in the fifth inning, New Britain broke up the game with a four spot. Greg Golson hit a two RBI double, Jon Jones sliced an RBI single while Jonathan Roof legged out an RBI fielder’s choice.
Former Patriot in 2013 and 2015, James Skelton, drilled a home run (3) in the sixth inning to make the contest 7-0, which would be the final margin of victory.
Cole Johnson (5-5) earned the win, allowing two hits in six scoreless innings. He retired the final 12 batters he faced. Alexis Candelario (0-1) sustained the loss, yielding six runs in 4.2 innings of work. Anthony Marzi notched the three inning save for his first of the year.
