Life Story: Orlando Micale, 90; Merchant Marine, U.S. Army Veteran

Mr. Orlando Micale passed away January 15 at St. Peter’s Medical Center in New Brunswick. He was 90 years old.

Mr. Micale was born in New Brunswick and lived there for much of his life. He has resided in North Brunswick since 1979.

He served our country faithfully in both the United States Merchant Marines and the United States Army. He worked for a time at Equitable Handbags in New Brunswick and as the Manager at the Helmetta General Store but retired from Brunswick Scientific from their shipping department. Mr. Micale never turned down a chance to play cards, go to the track or a quick trip to the casino. He was also a New York Giants and New York Yankees fan and a good bowler.

He was the youngest of 12 children having been predeceased by all of his siblings. He was also predeceased by his son-in-law Sonny Purkall.

Mr. Micale is survived by his wife of 70 years Carmelida (Cambria) Micale and by their children and spouses Sarah Kowal and Robert of Hillsborough, Christina Purkall of Monmouth Junction, Elizabeth Calvaruso and Joseph of PA., Nicola Orlando Micale and Dawn of Somerset and Ann Marie Walsh and Michael of PA.

He is also survived by his 12 grandchildren No. 1 Lisa, No. 2 Lori, No. 3 Carrie, No. 4 Christina, No. 5 Michael, No. 6 Sara Ann, No 7. Paul Joseph, No. 8 Alex, No. 9 Kyle, No. 10 Jack, No. 11 Kevin and No. 12 Savannah and his four great grandchildren Benjamin, Matthew, Emily and Anthony.

Visiting will be held from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. January 18. Funeral services will begin at 9 a.m. January 19 at the Gleason Funeral Home, 1360 Hamilton Street in Somerset, followed by a 10 a.m. funeral mass at St. Peter the Apostle RC Church in New Brunswick.

Entombment will follow at Holy Cross Mausoleum in South Brunswick.
