The Township Council on March 25 presented the Franklin High School varsity girls’ basketball team with a proclamation honoring them for their history making season.
The Lady Warriors captured the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section II Group IV state championships before falling in the first round of the group championship tournament, representing the furthest into the post-season the girls’ team has gone in the school’s history.
That feat was celebrated by the council and high school principal James R. Bevere at the council meeting.
“The Township Council and the residents of Franklin Township are very proud of our Lady Warriors girls’ basketball team,” said Councilman Carl R.A. Wright (D-Ward 4). “I am immensely proud of the women here today. More importantly, the township is proud of you.”
“The reason you are here is that sometimes, you don’t get the recognition you deserve,” Wright said. “I think next year, there’s a bigger trophy in the offing.”
Bevere told the team that they gave the high school “a little bit of soul.”
He said the girls gave the school a sense of pride.
“And the best part of it all is, we’re going to do it all again next year,” he said.
Coach Audrey Taylor said the team’s success “was all about how we believed each other.”
