The Franklin High School girls’ basketball team on May 1 finally received their trophy for winning the NJSIAA North Jersey, Group IV Section II state championships.
They also received a game ball – which they will all sign – a net from one of the goals in the high school gym and certificates attesting to their accomplishment.
“Those certificates are huge,” athletic director Kim Kenny told the girls. “Not everyone can get one of those.”
The team, along with coach Audrey Taylor, was also treated to a buffet dinner to celebrate their accomplishment.
The Lady Warriors staged a dramatic come-from-behind victory March 10 against East Orange to take the sectionals championship, the first in the school’s history.
Kenny told the girls that they had instilled pride in the school as well as the township.
“The pride and energy that you brought back to the community was unbelievable,” she said. “I had people in their 80s to little kids calling me.”
“Right now, you are the heartbeat of the township,” she said.
With the core of the team returning next year, Kenny predicted that “next year, you are going to be even better, and the year after that and the year after that.”
“The reason you girls were successful is that you are a family,” Kenny said.
