The Somerset Patriots have announced the return of right-handed pitcher Mike Solbach. Solbach played for Somerset during the 2012 season before having his contract purchased by the Colorado Rockies organization and reporting to Double-A.

The Somerset Patriots have announced the re-signing of right-handed pitcher Erik Arnesen. Arnesen finished the 2013 season with a 13-4 record, a 3.18 ERA, and 103 strikeouts in 149.2 innings pitched in 22 games started.

They fought until the end, but the Franklin High School girls’ basketball team lost an overtime heartbreaker in the March 1 Somerset County championships to Gill St. Bernard’s, 55-51. Gill got off to a quick 4-0 lead, but the Lady Warriors fought back, tying the game at 4 with about 4 minutes left in the first quarter.

The Franklin High School boys’ bowling team came up short in its quest for a title in the Group III state championships Feb. 27 at Carolier Lanes, North Brunswick, coming in second to Montville High School. Just getting to the state finals was a victory, coach Ken Margolin said.

The Franklin Township High School grapplers had a perfect day Feb. 8, beating Holy Cross, Oakcrest and Middle Township high schools in a quad meet at Holy Cross High School, Delran. Following are the match results:

The Franklin Township High School girls’ junior varsity basketball team lost Jan. 30 to the Watching Hils Regional High School squad, 41-31. Watching Hills took control of the game early, jumping to a 21-15 lead by halftime.

They got off to a slow start, but the Franklin High School varsity girls’ basketball team posted a 56-45 win Jan. 30 over Watchung Hills Regional High School. Watchung Hills grabbed an early lead, popping three 3-pointers making the score 9-2.
