Oct. 6 Vinod Arige of Iselin was cited for careless driving after his car rear-ended one driven on Claremont Road by Oghenerab Asama of New Brunswick.

[wpgmappity id=”20″] Township police are looking for five men who assaulted an Eden Street resident after stealing his two recreational vehicles. Searches for the men on Oct. 10 and 11 by township police and the State Police Aviation Bureau were unsuccessful.

Three people – including a township woman – face drug-related charges after a package delivered to a township home was found to contain about $500,000 worth of cocaine. One of the defendants also faces eluding charges after he allegedly led police on a short car chase, ending after a prosecutor’s office vehicle was struck on Park Street.

Sept. 29 Awilda Taveras-Defermin of Trenton was cited for careless driving after police said she drove through a stop sign at Martin Street and Norma Avenue, and collided with a car driven on Norma by Donna Wenk of Edison. Taveras-Defermin said she stopped at the sign and cleared traffic before entering the intersection.

Sept. 22 Jeffrey Corcoran of Helmetta was cited for careless driving after his car rear-ended one driven by Kevin Wyre of Plainfield on Route 27.  Corcoran said Wyre stopped suddenly, and he could not stop in time. Wyre said he had stopped for a pedestrian.

A township man who in July pleaded guilty to several gun- and theft-related charges was sentenced Sept. 4 to five years in state prison. A Hillsborough woman and two New Brunswick residents arrested Sept. 25 near Van Cleef Road face several drug- and gun-related charges, police said. Sept. 15 Prafulla Desai of Princeton was cited for careless driving after his car rear-ended one on Route 27 driven by Daniel Musch, also of Princeton. Musch was preparing to turn into a driveway when his car was struck.

County health officials are warning residents to be cautious after a rabid raccoon was found in the township. The raccoon was captured on Sept. 19 in the area of Hamilton Street/Amwell Road, according to a press release from the Somerset County Department of Health.

Update: Township fire officials cannot state a cause for the fire, but say that it is not suspicious, according to township police Sgt. Philip Rizzo. Rizzo said that it is possible a lit candle was left unattended, but, he said, the homeowner believes that they were all extinguished before they left.
