Although they’re not sure it would ever happen in Franklin, the Township Council at its March 11 meeting introduced an ordinance to ban fracking. The vote was not unanimous; Mayor Brian Levine (R), saying there really isn’t any opportunity for the practice within township borders, voted against it.

The township’s more than 300 Girl Scouts and adult volunteers were acknowledged with a mayoral proclamation at the March 11 Township Council session. Members of Girl Scout Unit 67presented an honor guard and led the council and audience in the Pledge of Allegiance at the meeting’s start.

Rutgers Preparatory School students brought a little bit of the New Jersey shore into school March 11 with the opening of the 3rd Graders’ Argo Arcade. The “arcade” consists of a number of games designed and built by the students, arranged along a cardboard “boardwalk.” The project is the kickoff to the school’s RPS Innovation Center.

U.S. Rep. Rush Holt, D-12, says he hasn’t thought too much about what he’ll do when he leaves Congress next January. “I don’t know if I’ll go back to academia, go to a foundation, work with the (Obama) administration,” he said.

Guided nature walks, sponsored by the Franklin Township open space program, are being offered through the spring and summer months. The walks are free and plotted along easy terrain.

It wasn’t looking too good for the Franklin High School Lady Warriors basketball team about half-way through the third quarter March 10. The Warriors had fallen 12 points behind the East Orange Lady Jaguars in the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section II Group IV finals. That was after having led by 10 in the second quarter.

A “limited number” of St. Matthias School students were evacuated for a short time March 10 after a written bomb threat was found on a door of a 4th grade classroom, police said.
