Danielsen: President Should Apologize For Racist Remarks To Congresswomen

State Assemblyman Joe Danielsen said Trump’s remarks were racist.

Pres. Donald Trump should apologize to the four House of Representative members he targeted in “racist” weekend tweets, telling them to “go back to where they came from,” a local state Assemblyman said on July 16.

State Assemblyman Joe Danielsen (D-12), called for the president’s apology in a Facebook post.

Danielsen, a Franklin resident, referred to Trump’s tweet of July 14, in which Trump wrote, “So interesting to see ‘Progressive’ Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run. Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested (sic) places from which they came. Then come back and show us how it is done. These places need your help badly, you can’t leave fast enough. I’m sure that Nancy Pelosi would be very happy to quickly work out free travel arrangements!”

Trump was referring to freshmen U.S. Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Ayanna S. Pressley of Massachusetts. Only Rep. Omar, who is from Somalia, was born outside of the United States.

Trump’s remarks were widely criticized by Democrats as being racist in nature.

Writing about Trump’s tweet, Danielsen said, “I am deeply troubled by the President’s hateful and racist comments toward four Congresswomen recently. The president of the United States is the face of America, and with comments like these, it has a chilling effect on our country.”

“Real leadership means working with others that disagree with you and not partaking in this unacceptable behavior,” Danielsen wrote. “In my hometown of Franklin, we have a multi-cultural and diverse population that welcomes all. At a time when there are inhumane conditions at the border, this insensitivity cannot be tolerated here in Franklin or anywhere in America.:

“I call on the President to immediately apologize for his remarks and to start showing real leadership,” he wrote.
