Update: The Franklin Warriors finished 34th out of the 104 teams from around the country who competed in the final week of the Cooperstown Dreams Park tournament.
The Warriors ended with a 4-2 record in regular play, falling in the opening game tournament round.
Original Story: A Franklin Warriors baseball team will once again play in a national tournament in Cooperstown, NY this week.
The team, aged 12 years and younger, is looking to better the 16th-place finish recorded by the last Franklin Township Baseball League squad to make the trip to baseball’s Mecca two years ago.
That team finished 16th of the 104 teams from around the country in the Cooperstown National Invitation Tournament.
This year, coach Trevor Moncrease has high hopes for his 13 players, who will compete in the Cooperstown Dreams Park tournament.
“I think we’re going to do well,” he said. “We beat a great team the other night, the NJ Hitmen, a club team. And we beat a team, Flemington, that beat us three weeks ago 10-0 in a Montgomery tournament, and we came back and beat them in the bottom of the 6th, so we’re in a good stride.”
“We’ve won six out of our last seven games,” he said.
Regular play for the 104 teams runs Aug. 27 to Aug. 29, with single-elimination tournament play beginning on Aug. 30. Cooperstown runs these tournaments each week during the summer.
The Warriors’ begin play at 8:30 a.m. Aug. 27, when they face the Sports KingDome Aces of New York. At 4:30 p.m., they play ARA Big Blue of California.
On Aug. 28, the Warriors face the Pasadena (Md.) Eagles at 8:30 a.m., a game which will be webcast. At 7 p.m., they play the Braintree (Mass.) Wamps 2 team.
At 11 a.m. on Aug 29, the Warriors play the Delmarva (Del.) Diamonds Select Baseball team, a game which will be webcast, and a 4:30 p.m. game that same day against the Ormond Beach (Fl.) Golden Spikes, which will also be webcast, according to the tournament schedule.
The games can be watched at www.dreamsparktv.com.
The players are affiliated with the Cal Ripken League, which is under the umbrella of the FTBL, Moncrease said. They play tournaments in and out of New Jersey once the regular FTBL season ends.
