The Franklin High School bowling teams earned split decisions against their first two opponents this year.
The boys’ team ended the first two competitions with a 1-1 record, while the girls’ team has yet to record a “W” at 0-2.
On Dec. 2, the girls dropped their first match, 7-0, against Warren Hills High School in a competition set at Oakwood Lanes in Washington Township.
Junior Alanna Merrit led her teammates with a pin total of 491 (147, 165, 179), followed by Senior Alexis Chyz’ 449 (119, 166, 164); Senior Brianna Barfield’s 418 (123, 137, 158); Freshman Shyann Hester’s 393 (158, 92, 143); Junior Kourtney Laming’s 382 (157, 101, 124) and Senior Nadia Pittman’s 337 (104, 108, 125).
But Franklin’s team totals of 704, 677 and 769 were not enough to best Warren’s scores of 917, 804 and 839.
The boys’ team faced a similar fate against Warren.
The team’s effort was led by Senior Sergey Eccles’ pin total of 732 (245, 232, 255), followed by Sophomore Dylan Coker’s 637 (221, 217, 199); Senior Kevin Greene’s 555 (202, 175, 178); Senior Nicholas Chow’s 544 (204, 152, 188); Junior Joseph Thigpen’s 483 (139, 165, 179) and Senior Muntasir Cooper’s 469 (139, 183, 147).
The team’s total pin count of 1,011, 972 and 999 fell short to Warren’s 1,020, 1,087 and 1,056.
The girls suffered a similar fate in their second match, getting shut out against North Brunswick High School at Carolier Lanes in North Brunswick.
Merrit once again led her teammates in pin count with 545 (193, 159, 193), followed by Pittman’s 478 (153, 168, 157); Hester’s 418 (158, 158, 102); Chyz’ 396 (138, 149, 109); Laming’s 320 (100, 110, 110) and Barfield’s 306 (102, 100, 104).
The girls’ game totals of 744, 744 and 673 were short of North Brunswick’s 995, 997 and 839.
The boys had better luck, however, shutting out North Brunswick 4-0 in an effort powered by Eccles’ match-leading pin total of 656 (205, 214, 237).
He was followed in pin totals by Chow’s 617 (222, 169, 226); Greene’s 609 (212, 152, 245); Coker’s 523 (188, 173, 162); Thigpen’s 463 (108, 199, 156) and Cooper’s 447 (132, 166, 149).
The boys’ game total pin counts were 959, 921 and 1,026, while North Brunswick racked up totals of 949, 746 and 867.
