Bridgewater, NJ- The Somerset Patriots have announced the signing of second baseman/utility player Nate Spears and utility player Steve Nikorak.

Spears has Major League experience with the Boston Red Sox in 2011 and 2012, where he played in seven games.

In addition to his Major League time, Spears has five seasons of Triple-A experience, including 68 games last season for the Cleveland Indians organization. He has also played for the Baltimore Orioles and Chicago Cubs organizations.

He has a minor league career .267 batting average, 1,024 hits, 196 doubles, 48 triples, 69 home runs, and 436 in and 1,138 games.

“Nate really solidifies the middle of our infield.  He looks to be a great defender and I also expect him to be a heavy contributor offensively.  Nate has many quality tools for the game of baseball and I think they will flourish in our environment.  We look forward to having Nate join our club and hopefully we can help him get back to the Major Leagues,” said Brett Jodie, Manager of the Somerset Patriots Baseball Club.

Nikorak has a season of professional baseball experience in the Chicago White Sox organization.

He was born in Lakewood, New Jersey and currently resides in Basking Ridge, New Jersey. He graduated from Stroudsburg High School in Pennsylvania where he grew up and went to college at Temple University, where he is the all-time leader in hits.

“We are happy to have Steve come join us this season.  Steve seems to have many good qualities both as a player and young man.  I am personally excited to get Steve into our camp and watch him compete with the other guys.  Steve does not have a lot of experience but I think he could blossom into a big time player,” Jodie said.
