About 100 people braved the snow the afternoon of Jan. 25 to attend the yearly open house for prospective students at St. Matthias School in Somerset.

The school’s principal, Sr. Jean Laurich, said she was “nervous” when she heard the weather report for the day.

“But everyone I’ve talked to so far thanked me for not cancelling it,” she said.

The school holds an open house at least yearly, usually in January, she said.

“Sometimes we have one later in the school year,” Sr. Laurich said.

St. Matthias, which offers grades Pre-K(4) through 8th Grade, currently enrolls about 569 students, she said.

The parents and children who attended heard brief presentations on the school from administrators, a parent and an alumna, then took guided tours of the building.

The open house also kicked off the school’s observance of Catholic Schools Week, which runs through Feb. 1.

Jolette Bernardeau of Somerset was at the open house with her daughter, Francesca. Bernardeau said Francesca already attends a different Catholic school, but it’s about 20 minutes away.

“It’s a lot to go back 20 minuts, versus having her right here,” Bernardeau said.

She said she picked St. Matthias because “I’ve been going to the church and I like what I see.”
