The Township Council Nov. 26 voted to buy a new Dodge Durango for the Department of Fire Prevention and lease copiers for the finance and animal control departments. The 2014 Durango is needed by the Fire Prevention department because of the addition of a new fire inspector, according to a memo from Township Clerk Ann Marie McCarthy.

New Brunswick should “ante up” if the township has to do any additional water supply testing in the wake of charges that the neighboring city’s former water department operator falsified three year’s worth of water tests. Minor adjustments to two ordinances were approved at the Township Council’s Nov. 26 meeting. The ordinances have to do with licensing and fees.

The organization that funds the Franklin Township Animal Shelter received a $2,000 donation to help it buy pet food for families in need.

The township’s willingness to house its medical and dental health care plans with one company led the company to slash its initial 2014 renewal premiums by more than $750,000. That was the word Nov. 12 from Stuart Migdon, of the Woodbridge-based Business & Governmental Insurance Agency, the township’s insurance broker.

Drivers may want to avoid Franklin Boulevard in the evenings and early mornings through Nov. 4. Repaving work on the road, between Easton Avenue and Hamilton Street, has begun. The work will be performed nightly from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

The township’s efforts in shielding Gauguin Way residents from noise and other nuisances of Middlebush Park’s sports complex aren’t sitting well with at least one resident. The 70-acre park, accessible off of DeMott Lane, is home to the township’s Pop Warner football program. With 300 players, Franklin’s Pop Warner program is considered to be the largest in Central New Jersey.

An ordinance that would continue the lease of township-owned land to the Franklin Township/South Bound Brook Little League was introduced at the Oct. 22 meeting. The five-year lease calls for an annual payment of $1 for the property at Hall Street and Madison Avenue. The lease would take effect in January 2014 and expire at the end of 2018.
