The Franklin High School varsity Boys’ Tennis team’s three seniors were honored May 18 in a ceremony before the match against Phillipsburg. The seniors were Ahmed Zubair, Sean Alexander Edwards and Justin Pride.

When hometown hero Furman Kugler crossed the finish line in 1940 ahead of Johnny Webber of Milwaukee to win the first Tour of Somerville bicycle race before a crowd of 20,000, Mayor Freas Hess told a reporter, “Maybe we should do this again next year.” They did, and with the exception of the World War II and a two-year pandemic …

May 10 was Senior Night for the Unified Track and Field team, with three team members being honored by their teammates. Honored were Declan Gordon, who competes in the shot put; Serena Rose, who competes in the shot put and 4×100 relay, and Joe Wood, who competes in the shot put. Joe Wood could not attend the event.

The students represented sports from the entire school year. Eight Franklin High School athletes signed letters of commitment to play for colleges around the country at a special ceremony May 6, held in the high school’s events lobby. The students honored were:

Seven of the eight Seniors honored on Senior Day. The eight Senior members of the Franklin High School baseball squad were honored May 5 in a special ceremony before their game against Warren Hills. The players walked through a gauntlet of their teammates, accompanied buy family and friends, stopping at the backstop for photos.

Franklin pitcher Mia Sanchez-Balzac winds up May 5 in the game against Pingry. The Pingry Big Blue cobbled together a 12-hit offense against the Franklin High School Lady Warriors softball team en route to an 8-1 win on May 5. Pingry jumped to a 3-0 lead in their half of the second inning and never looked back.

Warren Hills held the Franklin High School Warrior baseball team to just three hits May 5 on its way to a 4-0 victory. Warren Hills plated two runs in each of the first and fifth innings, spoiling Senior Day for eight Warriors.

The Franklin High School baseball Warriors could not figure out Rutgers Prep pitching on April 26, losing to the cross-town rivals 11-1. The Warriors’ sole run came in the second inning when, down 5-0, Junior Ryan Piro was driven home by an RBI single hit by Freshman Jacob Gordon.

The Franklin High School Lady Warriors pummeled the Bound Brook Crusaders, 16-6, April 25 in the Somerset County Tournament opener. Senior Julia Gabryszewski recorded the win for the Warriors.
