The township’s first African-American police officer will be honored Aug. 26 during the Week of the People celebration. It’s actually a re-do of the honor given to Naaman Williams 35 years ago, when the Matilda Avenue park that bears his name was first dedicated.

Space for commercial and non-profit organizations is still available for the fourth annual Franklin Day Festival, scheduled for noon to 5 p.m. Sept. 23 in Colonial Park. Volunteers are also needed for the event, where thousands of visitors are expected.

A township resident has been appointed to the Alternatives, Inc. Board of Trustees. Ivette Michel of Somerset is the newest board member of the organization, which is a non-profit social service agency for people with special needs in Central New Jersey, according to a release about the appointment.

It was a full day of fundraising July 17 for the Franklin Food Bank. Early in the day, hundreds of duffers gathered at the Royce Brook Country Club in Neshanic for the annual Golf Fore Groceries tournament.

The Somerset County Park Commission Horticulture Department invites the public to the 18th annual “Garden Party” featuring garden lectures and music from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 15. The Garden Party will be held in the Perennial Garden at the Colonial Park Gardens, Parking Lot F. Admission is free with donations kindly accepted.

Whistles, sirens and horns heralded the annual Middlebush Volunteer Fire Department’s Independence Day parade on July 4. The parade was comprised of fire and first aid tucks, antique cars and area residents, some of whom were decked out in their July 4th finery.

The township’s annual Independence Day celebration drew hundreds of people attracted by the excellent weather, music, food and, of course, fireworks. The July 3 event kicked off at 6 p.m. with music provided by Little Jimmy and the Starlites, who were followed by the cast of the Villagers’ teen production of “Heathers.”

Smiles and hugs were plentiful June 23 at the Franklin High School Class of 1987’s 30th reunion. The event, held at PJ Cavanaughs in the Holiday Inn on Davidson Avenue, drew alums from as far away as Ohio and Florida.
