Proclamations acknowledging Red Ribbon Week and Husain Day were presented at the Oct. 24 Township Council meeting. Oct. 23-31 was proclaimed Red Ribbon Week at the request of Alice Osipowitz, the township’s recreation director and head of the Municipal Alliance for the Prevention of Substance Abuse.

As promised, the Township Council Oct. 24 began the process to change the way it will fund the purchase of the 65-acre Consolata property on Route 27. The $14,090,000 price for the property was initially funded from the township’s capital account. Mayor Phil Kramer said in May that that would probably change.

Update: Echevarria, 40, was sentenced Oct. 24 to 84 months in prison by U.S. District Judge Esther Salas, sitting in Newark. Judge Salas also sentenced Echevarria to three years of supervised released and ordered him to pay forfeiture of $75,000, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Dozens of volunteers walked to erase hunger Oct 22 during the Somerset Presbyterian Church’s 44th annual CROP Walk. Walkers started at the church, located on John F. Kennedy Boulevard, and walked either the full 6.2 miles or the 2-mile mini-walk.

Update: What a police spokesman called “good, old-fashioned police work” resulted in the discovery that a township man drove the car that  smashed into the side of the community center. Police said that Joseph Driggers, Jr. 40, of Somerset was identified as the driver of the 2001 Chevy Impala that hit the building before fleeing the scene.
