Some people move into a new town and are happy to fade into the background and live their lives in relative anonymity. Others choose to become a little more involved, joining a civic organization or two, but nothing that will raise their public profile too much.

Township residents can recycle their Christmas trees from now though Jan. 31, 2018 at Colonial Park Gardens, Parking Lot F, 156 Mettlers Rd. The Somerset County Park Commission is accepting the trees for recycling from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

Update: The township Tax Collector’s office will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Dec. 30 to accept payments. Elizabeth M. Bessenyei, 91, passed peacefully on Christmas Eve morning at Somerset Woods Nursing Home. She was born on December 1, 1926 in East Pittsburg, Pa., and graduated from Scott High School. After high school she was employed as a secretary at J.C.Penny’s. She was a World War II bride, marrying her loving husband Albert Bessenyei at St. Elias Church …

Unity Bank employees recently donated $1,300 to the Franklin Food Bank and also learned that they will receive a one-time bonus thanks to federal legislation. The township food bank was one of 17 food pantries in New Jersey and Easton, Pa. to receive the donation, according to a press release from the bank.

Nearly a dozen members of a local women’s group brought some Christmas Eve cheer to residents at the Willow Creek Rehab & Care Center on Easton Avenue, even though the women don’t celebrate Christmas. The visitors were from the Somerset-Highland Park chapter of the Sisterhood of Salaam Shalom, a national organization comprised of Jewish and Muslim women.
