There was more than soup and chili served up March 11 by the East Millstone Historic Society at its annual meeting. Music by an Irish music trio, Lesser Seamus – featuring village resident Michael Steinbrück – and talks by Delaware and Raritan Canal author Linda Barth and Bob Mettler, the township historian, were also on the menu.

Franklin High School girls basketball standout Diamond Miller has made a non-binding commitment to play for the University of Maryland. The decision was made March 10, following a visit to the Miller home by the Terrapins’ head coach Brenda Frese and her staff.

“Making” was the theme March 10 as the township library hosted Franklin’s contribution to the statewide Makers Day event. Makers Day is a “statewide event that celebrates and promotes maker culture, as well as the values associated with making, tinkering and STEM-based learning,” according to the event’s schedule.

About 125 township teenagers attended the annual Teen Summit on March 10, learning strategies for coping with a variety of issues with which they may deal as they get older. The event, held at Sampson G. Smith School, featured a series of workshops ranging from bullying, to substance abuse prevention, to dealing with teen pregnancy and mental health issues.

Powered by double-digit scoring performances by four players, the Franklin High School Lady Warriors basketball team March 9 outplayed the West Orange Mountaineers to advance to the NJSIAA North Group IV finals. Franklin, which already has county and sectional titles under their belts, won comfortably by a score of 74-54.

Township Clerk Ann Marie McCarthy returned to her job March 9 after the Somerset County Prosecutor dropped insurance fraud charges against her. McCarthy was “not available for comment” the day she returned, said Deputy Township Clerk Msiba Holliman. Holliman was Acting Clerk in McCarthy’s absence.

Mrs. Joan Kolesar passed away March 7 at Kindred Hospital in Rahway. She was 82 years old. Mrs. Kolesar was born in Manhattan to John and Marie Joyce and grew up in Elizabeth. She also lived in Edison prior to moving to North Brunswick in 1976. She was a parishioner at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Milltown where she …
