Fundraiser Set For ‘Week Of The People’ Celebration

A variety showcase to benefit the Week of the People Committee is set for 7 p.m. April 24 at Franklin Middle School, 415 Francis St.

The donation is $5.

Featured at the event will be Briannagh D., Royal Blend Reggae Band, School of Rock and a host of others. Sound is donated by A Joyful Noise Sound.

The event will be the first of several for the Week of the People Committee, which will present the annual Week of the People Celebration, “WOP2015 Community Family Day Out, Cookout” in Naaman Williams Park on Matilda Ave. at the end of August.

Since the 1970’s the Week of the People Celebration has been a week-long celebrations of community and youth coming together in an expression of culture and community unity, according to a press release. The events have been designed to appeal to all ages, faiths, and cultures affording an atmosphere of fun, education, culture, entertainment, games, and food.

Week of the People events have always been organized and sponsored by local community organizations and businesses, according to the release. This year the Week of the People Committee is reaching out to the governing bodies, businesses, and the community for their support, donations and sponsorships

The Committee is looking for volunteers to help with making “WOP2015 Community Family Day Out, Cookout” a success. The Week of the People is a project of SCAP (Somerset Community Action Program) and is a non-profit organization.
