Township Police Play ‘Integral’ Role In Apprehending Suspected House Burglar

Township police played an unspecified but “integral” role in the April 1 arrest of an Edison man who authorities said burglarized homes in Middlesex and Bergen counties.

Somerset County Prosecutor Geoffrey D. Soriano said in a release that Herbbie Sheffield, 46, was arrested in Old Bridge by members of the Somerset County Burglary Task Force after he was found in possession of items taken from an Old Bridge home. Sheffield had been under surveillance by the task force prior to his arrest, Soriano said in the release.

A search warrant for Sheffield’s car and home revealed “numerous items of suspected stolen property, including some Asian coins that were identified as being stolen from a Closter home on March 25, Soriano said in the release.

Soriano said that detectives are trying to match the items with residential burglaries.

Charges are pending against Sheffield, according to the release. Sheffield was remanded to the Somerset County Jail, Somerville, on $50,000 cash bail, according to the release.

The release said Franklin Township police were “integral” to the investigation, as were police departments in Readington, Bernards, Bernardsville, Closter, Old Bridge, Piscataway and Bedminster, but did not say what role they played.
