Ordinance Change Mandates Court Appearance Only After Eighth False Burglar Alarm In One Year

Township residents who have problems with their security systems sending out false burglar alarms will not have to report to court until the eighth instance in a given calendar year, thanks to an ordinance approved June 26 by the Township Council.

But once that threshold is reached, a court appearance is mandatory, and the property owner faces a fine of up to $2,000.

Other aspects of the ordinance regarding false burglar alarms remain intact: a first warning is issued after the third instance in a year; a $50 fine and $15 in court costs is assessed after the fourth instance, and a $75 fine and court fee of $15 is assessed for the fifth, sixth and seventh instance in the same year.
