A 31-year-old Whittier Avenue resident was charged May 25 with the sexual assault of a 4-year-old in a township store.
David Lutz was charged with 2nd Degree Sexual Assault and 3rd Degree Endangering the Welfare of a Child after the incident, according to a press release from the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office.
Police were called to the store, which was not named, at about 3:25 p.m.
Lutz was allegedly seen touching the buttocks of the child, when the child was close to a parent and the parent was distracted, according to the release.
Lutz allegedly followed the child through the store before the assault, according to the release. After the alleged assault, which was observed by several other customers, Lutz was detained by several store employees, according to the release.
Detectives from the Franklin Township Police Department along with detectives assigned to the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Unit responded to the call and conducted the investigation.
Lutz remains lodged at the Somerset County Jail, Somerville.
