Piazza Orsillo took the first game July 20 of a Best-of-Three championship series in the township’s Over 50 Softball League.
Their opponents, Resta’s Care Care, came close to at least tying in the game’s final frame, but a bases-loaded ground out ended the rally.
Game two of the series is scheduled to be played July 22 and game three, if needed, will be played July 24, said Bob LaCorte, the league’s commissioner.
Mayor Phillip Kramer threw out the first pitch on the field at Middlebush Park, and the game was on.
There are four teams in the recreation league – in addition to the two in the finals, the Canal Walk active adult community has a team and there is a nonaffiliated team called The A Team – but LaCorte said he’d like to grow the league.
“I’d like six teams to get the community more involved,” he said.
This season Orsillo finished first, with Resta’s second, Canal Walk third and The A Team fourth, LaCorte said.
The season runs from about mid-April, with games played on Friday evenings and Sunday mornings, he said. Rain-outs are made up on Wednesdays, he said.
“It’s a good league, and there are some exciting games,” LaCorte said.
