Township Democrats held their annual summer picnic July 16 in Colonial Park.

In addition to the party faithful, special guests attending the JFK Club’s event included candidates for various township, county and federal offices.

“It’s just a way to get people out and see each other outside of what we do politically,” said Ron Jordan, chairman of the Franklin Township Democrats.

Making appearances at the event were Maria Rodriguez, who is running for Somerset County Freeholder; former Franklin Township Police Lt. Darrin Russo, who is running for Somerset County Sheriff; Charles Onyejiaka, who is running for a full term on the Township Council, and U.S. Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman, who is running for re-election.

With presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton at the top of the ticket, Jordan said he’s optimistic that Democrats will do well come November.

“We had a 54 percent turnout in Franklin in the primary,” he said. “If we can duplicate that in the general I think Hillary will do well, and I think we’ll have a good opportunity to elect our county candidates” as well as have success with the rest of the ticket.

Watson Coleman said she thought it was important to show up for the event because Franklin “is an important community.”

“Franklin Township is one of the most diverse communities I have in my district,” she said.

“This is a fun event, you get to relax and get to know one another a little better,” she said. “This wasn’t part of my legislative district, so it’s also a way for people to get to know me.”
