Turley Strikes Out 10 While Guzman And Roller Power Patriots To Win

817turleywebBridgewater, NJ –Somerset Patriots (22-18, 60-50) defeated the York Revolution (21-18, 61-48) 13-2 on Wednesday evening at TD Bank Ballpark.

Starting pitcher Nik Turley (3-0) scattered just three hits and struck out ten batters over six innings pitched for the win. The ten strikeouts ties a team season high.

“I felt like my breaking balls were working. I was able to throw them behind in the count and that helped me get back in control of at bats,” said Turley.

The Revolution took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an error that allowed a run to cross home.

Somerset answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the second on a solo home run by Carlos Guzman (10).

The Patriots extended the lead in the third inning on an RBI single by Bryan LaHair followed by a two-run blast by Kyle Roller (3) that made the score 4-1.

Guzman hit his second home run (11) of the game in the fourth inning to put Somerset up 5-1. It was Guzman’s first multi-home run game of the season.

“My first at bat he was picking away and was missing so I figured he eventually was going to have to come in and throw a fastball and I got one. My next at bat, I figured he was going to try to get one in quick and I swung at the first pitch and got it,” said Guzman, who finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBI.

LaHair’s sacrifice fly in the fifth inning gave the Patriots a 6-1 lead.

Another two runs were added in the seventh inning. David Vidal came home on a wild pitch and Brian Van Kirk plated a run with a base hit.

Somerset drew three walks and a batter was hit by a pitch all with the bases loaded before Gevon Jackson Jr. singled a run home in the eighth inning to provide a 13-1 advantage.

York plated a second run in the top of the ninth inning on a sacrifice fly for the 13-2 final.

James Simmons (9-6) suffered the loss, allowing six earned runs on nine hits in six innings pitched.
