Township Residents Take Part In Somerset Patriots’ Veterans’ Appreciation Day

Franklin Township military veterans were among those honored Aug, 27 at the Somerset Patriots’ annual Veterans Appreciation Day.

Among those attending were members of the Canal Walk Veterans Club and local attorney John Shamy, a Vietnam veteran and member of Vietnam Veterans of America Post 223 of Metuchen.

The event, which took place before the Patriots’ game against the Bridgeport Bluefish, was highlighted by a parade of veterans on the ballpark’s infield, speeches and a reenactment of the posting of the American flag on Iwo Jima by U.S. Marines during World War II.

There was also a presentation to Patriots’ chairman Steven Kalafer from members of the Vietnam Veterans of America Post 223 for his years of philanthropy and for hosting the veterans ceremony for the past 15 years.
