Township Republicans gathered May 5 at a Van Cleef Road home for their annual Kentucky Derby fund raiser.

The event has become something to which party members look forward every year, said GOP Chairman Bob LaCorte.

“Every year, people call and ask, are you having it?” he aid.

This year’s event drew between 50 and 60 people, LaCorte said.

“We had a great day, it wasn’t hot like yesterday,” LaCorte said. “We had a picnic, barbecue, good time. Everybody had a good time.”

As usual, the event was held at the home of Ken and Dayna Lemieux.

One feature of the event is a contest among the women for the best Kentucky Derby hat. This year, Cynthia Voorhees won the first prize, a bouquet of roses.

LaCorte said he came up with the idea of the fundraiser based on his love of horse racing.

“I just like horses and figured, let’s have a Kentucky Derby party,” he said.
