A St. Matthias School 8th Grader received an award for her efforts during a Model United Nations Conference at Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft.

Julia Kebuldaze won the Premiere Delegate Award for her portrayal of Nathaniel Folsom during a historical role play of the Continental Congress.

In all, 26 8th Graders from the school, located on John F. Kennedy Boulevard, participated in the conference, which was held in late November. Students investigated global relationships, applied research and public speaking skills and practiced collaborating with peers from six other schools.

Students tackled world issues such as the Ebola crisis, the use of chemical and biological weapons, and the dispute between North and South Korea.

“All the hard work was worth it,” said one student, Krista Caasi.

The 120 middle schoolers in attendance formed groups and proposed resolutions, gathering support to have their resolution pass.

“I met a lot of kids and we learned to cooperate with each other,” said Brett Subers.

With the growing importance of international relations in today’s world, two students, Max Shubert and William Zafian, both summarized the day by saying, “It was a once in a lifetime experience!”
