Sloppy Defense Dooms Somerset In 6-3 Loss

New Britain, Connecticut – The Somerset Patriots (23-16) allowed a late lead slip away against the New Britain Bees (17-24) in a 6-3 loss Sunday afternoon at New Britain Stadium.

The Patriots opened up the scoring in the top of the first inning on a Danny Dorn two-run single. Vinny Siena (1) followed up with a solo home run in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit in half.

New Britain later capitalized on a pair of Somerset errors to take a late lead. A fielding error from Craig Massey in the sixth set the stage for a Deibinson Romero RBI double that tied the game. The next inning, Scott Kelly committed a two-out error before three runs scored to give the Bees the lead. A two-run Romero single and an RBI double from Jason Rogers highlighted the inning.

Somerset got a run back on a Dorn RBI single in the top of the eighth, but the Bees answered on a Jonathan Galvez (3) solo home run in the bottom of the inning to keep it at a three-run lead.

Mark Hamburger (4-3) earned the win after he allowed two runs on three hits over seven innings. The former Patriot at one point retired 17-straight batters and set down 20 of the final 21 he faced. Cory Riordan (3-2) took the loss, yielding four runs (one earned) on six hits, one walk and a season-high 10 strikeouts. Evan Scribner (3) earned a four-out save to close the ballgame.

The 2018 Somerset Patriots season presented by Ford continues on Tuesday, June 12th when the Patriots return to TD Bank Ballpark to take on the York Revolution at 7:05 pm. For tickets, visit www.somersetpatriots.com
