Police: Township Man Dies After Jumping Off Driscoll Bridge
A 43-year-old Somerset man died Aug. 10 after he apparently jumped off the Driscoll Bridge in Sayreville into the Raritan River, authorities said.
The body of Troy McCracken was not found for about six hours after he jumped, when an employee of a Perth Amboy company reported seeing a body floating in the river, according to Sgt. Jeff Flynn, a New Jersey State Police spokesman.
Flyn said McCracken was pronounced dead at 12:54 p.m. He said an autopsy will be performed on Aug. 11 by the Middlesex County Medical Examiner.
Flynn said a passing motorist reported at about 6:23 a.m. seeing McCracken climb onto the hood of his car on the bridge’s shoulder, then jump over the side. Flynn said that report is still under investigation.
An initial search by State Police marine units was unsuccessful, Flynn said. He said it was not until the witness reported seeing a body in the river that the marine unit, aided by the Perth Amboy Police’s marine unit, was able to retrieve McCraken’s body.
