Updated: Police: SUV Driver Killed In Canal Road Accident

Update: The victim has been identified as 60-year-old David J. Haynes of Princeton Junction, police said.

Original story: The driver of an SUV was killed March 16 when their SUV crashed into a tree on Canal Road, police said.

Police said the driver, who was not identified pending notification of next of kin, was heading north on Canal when the auto crossed the double yellow line and crashed into a guardrail.

The SUV then crossed back to the northbound side of the road, striking a tree on the driver’s side, police said.

Officers arrived to find the driver “entrapped in the vehicle unconscious and unresponsive,” according to a press release on the accident.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Canal Road was closed between Georgetown and Coppermine roads for about two hours, police said.

Police are still investigating the accident; anyone with information is asked to call Cpl. Michael Deutchman of the department’s Traffic Safety Bureau at (732) 873-5533, Ext. 3110.
