Police: Pregnant Woman’s Baby Shower Balloon Blamed For Car Crash

A pregnant Somerset woman was driving from her baby shower Sept. 16 when a balloon from the shower blocked her view of the road, causing her car to hit a tree, flip and trap her, police said.

Police said Sushma Vemulapalli, 28, was driving down Pierce Street in the early evening when the balloon floated to the front of the car from the rear compartment, blocking her view of the road and causing her to swerve. The car, a 2013 Toyota Rav4, hit the curb, left the road and hit a tree, police said.

The impact with the tree flipped the car and forced it back onto the road, police said. Vemulapalli was trapped inside the car, police said, and was later extricated by firefighters.

She was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick after complaining of pain in her chest and arm, and lacerations on her hands, police said.

Pierce Street was closed for about two hours during the investigation, police said.

No charges had been filed as of Sept. 17, police said.
