Patriots Drop Second Half-Opener To Bees 6-2

New Britain, Conn. – The New Britain Bees (1-0, 27-42) opened up the second half of the season with a 6-2 victory over the Somerset Patriots (0-1, 42-29) Monday night at New Britain Stadium.

New Britain took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning on a Conor Bierfeldt (13) solo home run to left field. The Bees added three more runs in the fifth on a two-out, two-run Jovan Rosa single and an RBI single from Jordan Hinshaw.

Kyle Roller got Somerset on the scoreboard in the sixth on an RBI single that trimmed the deficit to 4-1, but James Skelton (8) responded the next half inning with a solo home run to extend the Bees’ lead back out to four.

A run-scoring error on a ground ball off the bat of Roller in the eighth brought the Patriots within three before a Mike Crouse sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth topped off the game’s scoring.

Kyle Simon (5-5) earned the win after he allowed one run over seven innings with four strikeouts. Rick Teasley (7-2) took the loss, yielding four runs over five innings.

The Patriots and the Bees continue their three-game series Tuesday afternoon in New Britain on Independence Day. Lucas Irvine (4-2, 4.90 ERA) toes the rubber for Somerset against Bees’ righty Mike Lee (2-5, 4.44 ERA). First pitch at New Britain Stadium is scheduled for 2:05 p.m.
