New Brunswick Man Killed In Auto Accident

A 28-year-old New Brunswick man was killed late in the evening on March 12 after a car collision at Route 27 and Franklin Boulevard, police said.

Police said that at approximately 11 p.m., Rafelo Peralta was traveling south on Franklin Boulevard when his Toyota Scion collided with a Ford F-150 pickup, driven by Jose Velez-Fernandez, 31, also of New Brunswick. Velez-Fernandez was turning left from Route 27 to Franklin Boulevard at the time of the accident.

Responding officers found Peralta unconscious and unresponsive, police said. Both drivers were taken to a local hospital, where Peralta was pronounced dead.

Velez-Fernandez suffered non-life threatening injuries, police said.

The Franklin Township Police Department’s Traffic Safety Bureau and Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Collision Analysis Reconstruction Team are conducting an investigation into the factors that contributed to this incident, according to a press release from the FTPD. No charges have been filed at this time.
