Montauk Transit To Absorb Some Mercy Bus Routes In School District

3-27-14 meeting1

Mercy Transportation Co. is in the process of selling some of its school district routes to Montauk Transit.

A New York-based bus company that took over most of the school district’s bus routes has agreed to take on some more.

Montauk Transit Service of Medford, N.Y. has agreed to purchase some equipment from and assume some district bus routes held by Mercy Transportation Inc. of Monmouth Junction.

The deal, which will affect 1,850 students, is effective immediately, but could take up to 30 days to transition, according to a notice on the district’s Web site.

The Board of Education at its March 27 meeting approved the route transfer.

Board business administrator John Calavano said that this was the first year Mercy had the routes in question.

“They were just doing a handful of special-education routes,” he said. “This was the first year they took on more routes.”

The district notice said buses will still operate on the same schedule.

Montauk on Jan. 6 took over the bulk of the district’s bus routes, previously held by Atlantic Express Transportation Corp. of Staten Island, N.Y. Atlantic Express had late last year filed for bankruptcy protection.

There was no word on what the deal’s value is.
