Life Story: Howard Altschul, 81; Helped Start Temple Beth El, Performed With Villagers

Mr. Howard Altschul passed away Jan. 23 at his home in Somerset. He was 81 years old.

Mr. Altschul was born in Brooklyn and lived there as a child. He graduated from Brooklyn College and obtained a Masters in Micro Biology from St. John’s University. He served our country faithfully in the United States Air Force. He lived in Alabama and Texas while in the Air Force prior to moving to Somerset in 1964.

He was a founding member and Past President of Temple Beth El in Somerset. Mr. Altschul was on the Board of Directors of the Renaissance Community in Somerset and a performer at the local community theater, The Villagers Theater in Franklin Township.

He was pre-deceased by his brother Arthur Altschul.

Mr. Altschul is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lois Altschul of Somerset. He is also survived by his children Eliot Altschul and his partner Jonathan, Heidi Varon and her husband Jack of Teaneck and Mindy Altschul and her husband Alan Jayson of Somerset, a brother Michael Altschul and his wife Jacqueline of East Brunswick and four grandchildren Rachel and her husband Jacob, AJ and his wife Tali, Harry and Sarah.

A funeral service will begin at noon on Jan. 24 at Temple Beth El in Somerset and graveside services will follow at Knollwood Park Cemetery in Ridgewood, NY.
