Life Story: Grace Rowland O’Hare, 92; Retired Executive Secretary

Grace Rowland O’Hare passed away onMarch 12 at her home is Jamesburg. She was 92 years old.

She was born in Newark and lived in New Brunswick until her marriage in 1948 when she moved to Somerset. In 1990 she moved to the Rossmoor Active Adult Community in Monroe.

She attended the New Jersey College for Women (Douglass College). She took the Executive Secretary course at Berkeley Secretarial School in New York City.

She was a secretary at Johnson and Johnson, Rutgers University, Secretary to the Chief Scout Executive at the National Headquarters of the Boy Scouts of America and retired from Bristol Myers Squibb in 1992 as the Secretary to the Executive Director of Pharmaceutical Research.

Mrs. O’Hare was a former parishioner of St. Peter the Apostle Church in New Brunswick and Nativity of Our Lord Church in Monroe. She was a Eucharistic Minister to the homebound and at Mass, a teacher in the Children’s Liturgy of the Word, and a choir member.

Mrs. O’Hare also volunteered at local nursing homes, was a member of the Interfaith Council of Rossmoor, and was President of the Roman Catholic Society of Rossmoor. She was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Rossmoor and editor if its newsletter. She belonged to the Bristol Myers Squibb Quarter Century Club and Retirees Activity Club, The Emerald Society and other groups at Rossmoor, auxiliary member and volunteer at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital, delivered meals on wheels and served as a Teacher’s Aide at JFK Elementary School.

She was pre deceased by her parents Dr. John Rowland and Mary Irene Rowland, her husband Edmund, a brother Dr. John H. Rowland Jr. and sisters Elizabeth Huber and Irene Clark.

Mrs. O’Hare is survived by her son and daughter in law Kevin and Patricia of Philadelphia, a step brother Robert Cox of Pennsylvania, a granddaughter Christine Balen and her husband Stephen of NC, great grandsons Austin and Cameron, a great granddaughter Savannah Grace, 20 nieces and nephews and may great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews.

Visiting will be held on Friday March 16, 2018 at the Gleason Funeral Home 1360 Hamilton Street in Somerset from 4-8 PM. Services will begin on Saturday at 9:15 AM at the funeral home followed by a 10 AM funeral mass at St. Peter the Apostle R.C. Church in New Brunswick. Interment will follow at St. Peter’s Cemetery, New Brunswick. Memorial Contributions may be made to St. Peter the Apostle Church 94 Somerset Street in New Brunswick.
