It may only be the preseason, but the Franklin High School varsity boys soccer team is looking primed for a big season, as they demonstrated in their first preseason matchup against Piscataway High School, which they won 4 – 0.

The Franklin side saw two goals from Ryan Arnold, one from Jaime Asuncion, and one from Ronaldo Ruiz. They came out of the gate firing, scoring the first goal of the game in just the third minute of play.

The two teams battled for possession for the rest of the first half as Franklin entered the half holding on to a 1 – 0 lead. They came off the bench rejuvenated for the second half, scoring their remaining three goals and holding on to shutout Piscataway.

“I’m proud of the way they’ve been playing,” a parent of one of the players said. “Coach Riverso seems like he’s leading them in the right direction. Hopefully we can improve over last season.”

Coach Dan Riverso has done a great job getting the team into playing shape heading into the season. Their ball skills and fitness are looking much improved over a disappointing season last year, to say the least.

Behind the leadership of team senior captains Brendan and Colin Kane, and junior captain Bill Hill this team is looking like a uniquely tight-knit and cohesive unit.

The boys look to put some finishing touches on their play and tighten up some of their formations as they have one more preseason scrimmage coming up on August 28th at Gill St. Bernard’s.

The race for the Skyland Conference Title starts on Tuesday, September 8 when they hit the road to take on North Plainfield High School. Franklin had a below average year last season, but based on their impressive off-season the only way they can possibly go is up.
