Entry Deadline Looms For Venus Jewelers’ Mother’s Day Poetry Contest

49~venus_logoChildren in grades Kindergarten to 12 have until April 30 to enter Venus Jewelers’ annual Mother’s Day contest by submitting a poem describing why their mother is their hero.

While all who enter will receive a gemstone, six grand prize winners will receive gemstone hearts, according to a release about the contest.

The contest’s goal is to help children celebrate their mothers, caregivers or guardians in a creative way, according to the release.

“There is no greater gift than the gift of appreciation and that’s why we host a Mother’s Day contest every year,” Peter Stavrianidis, principal of Venus Jewelers, said in the release. The fourth generation, family-owned business has been in operation for 35 years.

“We usually alternate between an art and poetry contest yearly so children can get creative while also ‘earning’ something to take home for their mother, guardian, or caretaker on Mother’s Day,” Donna Yi, Venus’ sales and marketing manager, said in the release. “It’s a massive undertaking as we receive hundreds – and sometimes over a thousand – entries, but it is events such as these that are most rewarding.”

“Because we include a wide range of ages, we get everything from cute to heartfelt, sometimes sad, and often times very funny submissions,” she said in the release. “We post them all around the store around Mother’s Day because our clients love reading them. Kindergartners surprise me with their artwork, honesty, and their misspellings are hard not to smile at.”

Students and teachers can send in their poetry to “My Mom, My Hero Contest,” Venus Jewelers, 1024 Easton Ave., Somerset, NJ 08873 by April 30. Poems should be no longer than one page and should include the student’s name, grade, contact information, teacher’s name and school.

Winners will be announced on May 6. Gemstones and poetry may be claimed in store between May 8-31.
