The Somerset County Park Commission Horticulture Department has scheduled “Container Gardening with Edible Plants,” a workshop for children age 7 to 10 accompanied by a adult. The workshop is limited to 10 participants.

The program is scheduled for Saturday, June 25, 2016 from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 Noon at the Colonial Park Fragrance & Sensory Garden, Parking Lot A, 156 Mettlers Road in Somerset, Franklin Township.

Garden staff will lead an informative and entertaining workshop on edible plants. The program will begin with a behind the scene tour of the Fragrance & Sensory Garden, learning about edible plants, before creating an edible container garden to bring home. All supplies will be provided.

Fee is $15 per child. Pre-registration is required by Thursday, June 23, 2016 and may be done in person at the Horticulture Office at Colonial Park Gardens, Lot F, online @somersetcountyparks.org, or by calling 732-873-2459 ext. 21 or NJ Relay 711 for individuals with a hearing or speech impairment.

The Colonial Park Gardens include the Arboretum, the Perennial Garden, and the Rudolf W. van der Goot Rose Garden.

The 144-acre Arboretum, a living tree museum, contains labeled specimens of flowering trees, evergreens, shade trees, dwarf conifers, and flowering shrubs. This includes the three-acre Shrub Collection that showcases plants that grow well in central NJ and are designed to give year-round interest.

The Perennial Garden is a beautiful five-acre garden with a gazebo that provides year-round interest and color from its collection of flowering shrubs, bulbs, perennials, and annuals.

The Rudolf W. van der Goot Rose Garden, a formal display garden, comprising one acre of plantings with over 3,000 roses of 325 varieties. The garden is at its peak from late spring into autumn.
