Atkins Dazzles As Somerset Defeats New Britain 5-1

New Britain, Conn. – The Somerset Patriots (9-4) won their third-consecutive ballgame Wednesday with a 5-1 victory over the New Britain Bees (4-7) at New Britain Stadium.

Somerset began the scoring in the top of the seventh inning with a two-out rally. A Darren Ford RBI single and an Olmo Rosario three-run RBI double put the Patriots in front 4-0. The Bees responded in the bottom of the inning on a Jon Griffin RBI single, but stranded the bases loaded to prevent further damage.

An Adam Donachie two-out RBI single in the top of the eighth inning topped off the scoring. The fifth-year Patriot went 3-4 in the game with an RBI, run scored and a stolen bases.

Patriots’ starting pitcher Mitch Atkins (2-1) earned the win after striking out a season-high nine batters over six scoreless innings of work.

“It felt real good on the mound today,” said Atkins. “[Adam] Donachie made some good calls all game long, we got on a good page early, our games came up with some big runs in the seventh and we got ourselves a nice win.”

Bees’ reliever Brandon Fry (0-1) allowed four runs on two hits and three walks in 1.2 innings to suffer the loss.

Patriots southpaw Aaron Laffey (1-1, 2.70 ERA) takes the mound for Somerset in Thursday’s series-finale against Bees’ righty Brian Dupra (0-0, 3.37 ERA).
