Bridgewater, NJ- Yovan Gonzalez’s walk off single in the 11th inning led the Somerset Patriots (26-16) to a 2-1 win over the Sugar Land Skeeters (21-21) at TD Bank Ballpark on Friday evening.
With the bases loaded and nobody out, the Patriots struggled to plate the winning run until Gonzalez laced a two-out single past the pitcher.
“I hit it pretty good. I knew it was right at the pitcher. As soon as it hit the mound, it got a little extra skip and went by him,” said Gonzalez. “ Even though I thought the shortstop might have had it, it was going to be tough to take me out at first.”
The Patriots took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Aharon Eggleston.
Sugar Land tied up the game in the top of the seventh inning on a solo home run by Andy Wilkins (11) to right field.
Somerset starter David Kubiak pitched a season high eight innings, allowing just one run on five hits and nine strikeouts in a no decision.
Duane Below (3-0) picked up the win with a scoreless inning pitched. Dustin Richardson (0-2) took the loss, allowing a run on two hits in 0.2 innings pitched.
The 2017 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue at home with a 7:05 pm game on Saturday night against the Sugar Land Skeeters. The game includes a Post-Game Fireworks Show. For tickets, visit www.somersetpatriots.com.
