The physical effects of stress, depression and other mental health disorders, and tips on keeping mentally “fit” were the main topics of a workshop presented Dec. 15 at the Franklin High School cafeteria.
The workshop was the brainchild of three FHS students, Rohit Aita, Sunny Patel and Sohil Patel, all of whom comprise the community project team of the school’s chapter of Future Business Leaders of America.
The group partnered with Minding Your Mind, a Rosemont, Pa.-based company whose mission, according to its web site, is “to provide mental health education to adolescents, teens and young adults, their parents, teachers and school administrators. Our goal is to reduce the stigma and destructive behaviors often associated with mental health issues.”
Speakers from the group spoke about their life experiences and provided tips on how to deal with stress and other mental health issues.
The workshop was the first of a two-component project devised by the students, Aita said.
“The second prong will be to target high school juniors and seniors,” he said. “It’s the same message, but its more of a classroom environment and more of a small group environment.”
Aita said his organization is participating in a statewide community service project competition, and this project will be their entry. Information on the project will be sent to the FBLA state leadership conference, he said.
