Waldorf, Maryland – The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (19-16, 44-60) scored six runs in the fourth inning to down the Somerset Patriots (13-22, 55-50) 9-7 on Saturday night at Regency Furniture Stadium.
The Patriots jumped ahead with a run in the first inning when Justin Pacchioli walked, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. Edwin Espinal, the next batter, drove Pacchioli in with a sacrifice fly.
Mike Ohlman reached on an error by third baseman Tony Thomas to lead off the second inning. Then, Yovan Gonzalez was hit by a pitch. After a successful sacrifice bunt from Rey Navarro, Teodoro Martinez delivered a two-run single to center field to stretch the Patriots lead to 3-0.
But the Blue Crabs offense heated up in the third. Thomas drove in a run on a single to left and later scored on Cory Vaughn double to make it a 3-2 game.
In the fourth, Southern Maryland poured it on with six runs on four hits to take an 8-3 lead.
After three scoreless frames, Alfredo Rodriguez began the eighth with a single up the middle. Next, Will Kengor doubled to center field, then Pacchioli drove in Rodriguez with a single. Later in the inning, Kengor scored on a wild pitch and Mike Ohlman and Gonzalez finished off the scoring with back-to-back RBI doubles to cut the deficit to one.
The Blue Crabs got a run back in the bottom of the eighth inning when Mike Falsetti scored on a wild pitch.
Kyle Simon (4-8) earned the win after giving up eight runs in 7.1 innings. Rick Teasley (4-2) takes the loss after allowing eight to score in four innings. Mat Latos (19) recorded the save for the Blue Crabs.
