Matt Fields’ Grand Slam Leads Patriots To 7-4 Win

sept16FINALgm2Bridgeport, CT – The Somerset Patriots (37-28, 87-48) defeated the Bridgeport Bluefish (29-36, 55-80) 7-4 Wednesday evening at Harbor Yard in game two of a day-night doubleheader.

 

In the bottom of the fourth inning designated hitter Wilson Batista looped a RBI single to give Bridgeport a 1-0 advantage.

 

Right fielder Michael Burgess stroked a two RBI single in the top of the sixth inning to put Somerset in front 2-1.

 

Second baseman Greg Hopkins hammered a home run (11) to increase the Patriots lead to 3-1 in the top of the seventh inning.

 

Bridgeport received a RBI single from catcher Jobduan Morales in the ensuing half inning to cut the deficit to 3-2.

 

The Patriots broke open the game in the top of the eighth inning as designated hitter Matt Fields socked a grand slam (4) to increase the lead to 7-2.

 

The Bluefish tallied a run in the home half of the eighth inning when Batista ripped a RBI double making the contest 7-3.

 

In the bottom of the ninth inning pitcher Jon Hunton hurled a wild pitch to plate a run as the score became 7-4 which would be the final.

 

Roy Merritt earned the win (8-6) tossing six innings while allowing one run. Brand Bixler suffered the loss (0-3) yielding three runs in seven innings of work.
