Bridgewater, NJ- The Somerset Patriots (13-3, 48-31) defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (6-8, 32-45) 7-1 in the night game of the doubleheader at TD Bank Ballpark on Wednesday evening.
Starting pitcher David Kubiak (7-1) struck out a team season-high 11 batters over seven innings for the complete game. He allowed a run on five hits and walked one batter.
“It makes things easier when all the pitches are working. Everything felt good once I figured it out,” said Kubiak. “You can ask any pitcher and they’ll tell you it’s easier when the offense puts the runs on the board and you’re sitting ahead early.”
The Patriots took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Alfredo Rodriguez and an RBI single by Nate Coronado.
The Blue Crabs made it a one run game on an RBI single by Angelys Nina in the top of the top of the fourth inning.
Somerset broke the game open with five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Rodriguez drove home two with a double and later scored on a wild pitch. Matt Oberste then blasted his first home run as Patriot to make the score 7-1.
