For most of the game, it looked like the Franklin High School football Warriors were going to generate some homecoming magic on Oct. 25.
After jumping to a 15-0 lead in the first quarter in their contest against undefeated Old Bridge, the Warriors managed to hold a lead of varying size through three quarters of the game.
Franklin held a 32-21 lead with 11 minutes left in the game. The Warriors stymied an Old Bridge drive forcing a punt on 4th and 8.
But the punt return was fumbled, with Old Bridge recovering at the Franklin 16 yard line. The Knights scored on the next play, bringing the score to 32-27.
Old Bridge’s two-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful, leaving Franklin with a 5-point lead with just about 10 minutes left in the game.
Old Bridge scored again with about 1:49 left in the game. A second two-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful, leaving the Knights with a 33-32 lead until time ran out.
Franklin’s final regular-season game is Nov. 1 at Montgomery.
