Bridgewater, NJ- The Long Island Ducks (12-8) defeated the Somerset Patriots (12-6) 6-2 at TD Bank Ballpark on Saturday night.
The Ducks took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI double by Lew Ford, a sacrifice fly by David Washington, and an RBI single by Wilkin Castillo.
The Patriots cut the lead with two runs in the bottom of the second inning on a double by Yovan Gonzalez that made it a one run game.
“Yovan’s at bat was outstanding,” said Somerset Patriots manager Brett Jodie. “It pulled us right back in there after we gave up three quick ones in the first inning. We had plenty of time to come back and make something happen. Then we gave up another big inning and it was too much tonight with the way [starting pitcher John Brownell] was throwing.”
Long Island extended the lead with three runs in the top of the seventh inning. Travis Snider led off the inning with a home run (2). A run scoring error and an RBI double by Castillo made the score 6-2.
Brownell (2-2) picked up the win, allowing two earned runs on four hits in six innings pitched. Cory Riordan (1-1) suffered the loss, allowing three earned runs on eight hits in five innings pitched.
The 2018 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue at home with a 1:05 pm game on Sunday, May 20th against the Long Island Ducks. The game features Jersey Cinch Sacks (1st 1,000 Kids) presented by NJEA and a Paw Patrol Appearance by Chase and Marshall. For tickets, visit www.somersetpatriots.com.
